Diatize was founded in 2011 in East Harlem by Reverie Santos and Dennis Sheehan. Dennis was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and suffered a mild heart attack in December of 2007. After receiving his diagnosis he fell into a state of depression. He soon realized he had the fight of his life on his hands and there was no option to quit. Ms. Santos' convinced Dennis to put his culinary skills to the test. Doctors had given Dennis antiquated dietary guidelines which he knew he or anyone else with taste buds could never stick to.
Dennis began preparing his healthy lunches daily for himself and Reverie to take to work as well as nutritious snacks to avoid between meal temptation. After a couple of months they both realized they had lost weight and Dennis had his blood sugar under control along with their exercise routine. Reverie who suffered from high blood pressure saw positive changes as well.
Soon friends and co-workers began to ask Dennis how he lost the weight. He told them that he was "Diatizing" his meals, meaning taking his favorite foods and turning them into healthy meals customized for Type 2 Diabetics as well as exercising daily. One day a prediabetic co-worker asked if she could eat the same meals he did. She was the first one to be "Diatized."
